MA, Mental Health Therapist
Hello! I am so pleased that you are considering engaging in personal growth through therapy. I am a Mental Health Therapist with over 25 years of counseling and teaching adults. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Spanish from Washington University in St. Louis, and a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology, Counseling and Student Personnel, from the University of Minnesota. I am a certified Mental Health First Aid trainer and have completed training in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) which is particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced trauma. I am actively pursuing licensure as a Professional Counselor. I have substantial experience counseling clients grappling with an array of challenges, including anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, grief and loss, ADHD, housing/food insecurity, decision-making, and relationship concerns. My areas of expertise include racial and cultural issues, and career and student development.
My number one priority to an individual seeking therapy is to present a safe space. I want them to know that it’s okay to be vulnerable; it’s okay to share from their heart. It is gratifying to help clients recognize their strengths and how to utilize them to cope with daily stressors. I am a strong proponent of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), helping clients uncover how their thoughts, feelings and behaviors are interconnected and how changing their thinking can significantly reduce their stress. I also work with clients through a Humanistic lens, aiming to help them increase their sense of belonging and fulfill their potential. Most importantly, however, I utilize an eclectic approach, as one size does not fit all. I tailor my approach to fit the needs and goals of my clients. I want them to feel empowered, to be the driving force that propels them through their personal journey.
The safe space that I strive to create is one that is inclusive and welcoming. I have extensive experience working with diverse populations, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and neurodivergent. I practice cultural humility; I endeavor to learn about the values and beliefs of others and never assume that I have all the answers.
My favorite pastime is reading, especially mysteries. I enjoy seeing movies and musicals with family and friends, and I love to travel. I find nature walks and yoga both energizing and relaxing. I derive great satisfaction from volunteering with an agency that strives to reduce the stress and stigma around mental health challenges through education and resources.
I see clients at our Edina location in-office or virtually. Feel free to contact me at valerie@mn-ccc.com.
